This course will introduce you to different areas within English linguistics, thus enabling you to apply your knowledge to the analysis of the language of literary texts. More specifically, you will analyse texts from a wide range of literary genres at morphological, syntactical, semantic, pragmatic and phonetic levels. You will be encouraged to reflect on how language choices help authors to shape the representation of different themes and perspectives, and how these can influence the readers' interpretation. You will also be invited to think about English language from a diachronic perspective, thus reflecting on how the language has developed through time. The themes explored in the set literary texts will also be used as a starting point to discuss topical issues such as multiculturalism, environmentalism and gender equality, among others.
