This course will introduce you to different areas within English linguistics, thus enabling you to reflect on the main similarities and differences between English and Italian, as well as on any translation challenges that these may pose. More specifically, you will analyse newspaper articles and advertising texts at morphological, syntactical, semantic, textual, pragmatic and phonetic levels. You will also be invited to think about the English language from diachronic, diatopic and diastratic perspectives, thus reflecting on its development through time and on the different varieties of English currently used across anglophone countries and different social communities. The topics covered in the set texts will also be used as a starting point to discuss topical issues such as multiculturalism, environmentalism and gender equality, among others.
